Choosing the Right Pump for the Right Pressure, Space and Fluid Challenge

Industrial pump selection is rarely a one-size-fits-all decision.

A pump may need to handle vapour in the liquid. It may need to generate high pressure across a demanding system. It may need to fit into a tight plant room, ship engine room or process area where space is limited but performance cannot be compromised.

That is why understanding the application matters as much as understanding the pump.

This month, we focus on three specialised pump ranges that solve very different operational challenges: the BT Side Channel Centrifugal Pump, the G/GH Multistage High Pressure Pump, and the MU-L / MU-LDS Vertical In-Line Centrifugal Pump.

Each one is engineered for a specific set of conditions — and each one plays an important role in keeping industrial, marine, utility and process systems moving.

BT Side Channel Centrifugal Pumps: Built for More Than Clean Water

Some liquids are straightforward to pump. Others are not.

Liquids that contain vapour or gas can create serious challenges for standard pump designs. Condensate, light oils, petrol, seawater and certain process liquids may behave differently under suction or pressure conditions, especially when vapour pockets are present.

This is where the BT Side Channel Centrifugal Pump range stands out.

BT pumps are self-priming, side-channel, multistage pumps designed for duties where reliable suction and stable transfer are important. Their operating principle makes them particularly suitable for transferring liquid-gas or vapour mixtures.

The brochure highlights a very low NPSHr value, allowing operation with suction lift up to 8 metres. This makes the BT range especially valuable where suction conditions are not ideal, or where dependable priming is needed.

Typical applications include:

  • drinking water and industrial water;
  • seawater;
  • automatic systems with hydrofore tanks;
  • acid and alkaline liquids;
  • petrol and light oils;
  • condensate and liquids containing vapours; and
  • food and pharmaceutical products.

The BT’s star-shaped impellers are hydraulically balanced to reduce axial thrust on the bearings, supporting smoother and more reliable operation.

In simple terms, the BT range is designed for applications where the liquid does not always arrive in perfect condition — but the process still needs dependable flow.

G/GH Multistage High Pressure Pumps: When Pressure Is Part of the Process

High pressure is not only about power. It is about controlled performance.

In applications such as boiler feedwater, reverse osmosis, firefighting and pressure boosting, a pump needs to do more than move liquid from one point to another. It must build pressure reliably and maintain performance under demanding operating conditions.

The G/GH Multistage High Pressure Pump range is designed for exactly that.

These pumps are used for clean or slightly dirty liquids without solids in suspension and are suited to applications such as:

  • steel industry;
  • waterworks and water supply plants;
  • pressure raising systems;
  • firefighting systems;
  • boiler feedwater systems;
  • high-pressure washing; and
  • reverse osmosis.

The G/GM range offers capacities up to 600 m³/h, total head up to 400 m and discharge pressure up to 64 bar. Its horizontal multistage design builds pressure progressively, making it well suited to high-head requirements.

The range also offers installation flexibility. The suction and discharge casings can be rotated in three positions, helping engineers design pipework layouts more practically. Vertical configurations are also available where footprint is limited, especially in shipbuilding and other space-sensitive environments.

For even more demanding pressure applications, the GH range extends performance further. It is designed for applications such as power generation, seawater desalination, boiler feed water, reverse osmosis, snowmaking, shipbuilding, offshore applications, pumping stations and pipeline test work.

Where the process depends on pressure, the G/GH range is designed to deliver.

MU-L / MU-LDS Vertical In-Line Centrifugal Pumps: Efficient Flow Where Space Matters

In many installations, space is one of the biggest design constraints.

Plant rooms, marine engine rooms, HVAC systems, scrubber systems and water treatment facilities often need reliable pumping performance without taking up unnecessary floor space. This is where vertical in-line pump design becomes especially useful.

The MU-L Vertical In-Line Centrifugal Pump range is designed for fresh water, seawater, condensate, oils, chemical and petrochemical products.

Its key applications include:

  • shipbuilding;
  • heating plants;
  • air conditioning systems;
  • scrubber systems;
  • aqueducts;
  • effluent treatment plants;
  • fire fighting; and
  • petrochemical plants.

The vertical in-line design supports compact installation, while the pump’s volute casing, single-stage construction and in-line flanges make it practical for systems where efficient flow and space-saving layout are both important.

The MU-L range also includes features that make maintenance more practical. With back pull-out design, rotating components can be removed without disturbing the pipework, pump casing or motor when used with a flexible spacer coupling.

This is important because downtime is not only caused by pump failure. It is also caused by complicated access, pipework disruption and time-consuming maintenance.

The MU-LDS range extends the concept further with a vertical in-line double suction centrifugal pump design. It is suited to clean liquids such as fresh water, seawater, industrial water, condensate, brine and oils, with applications in shipbuilding and land-based industrial systems, including circulation, cooling, water supply and general services.

The MU-L / MU-LDS range is therefore not just about moving liquid. It is about efficient installation, practical access and dependable flow in environments where space and uptime both matter.

Three Products, Three Different Pumping Challenges

The value of these pump ranges becomes clearer when you look at the problem each one solves.

The BT Side Channel Centrifugal Pump is suited to applications where suction conditions, self-priming capability and liquid-gas or vapour mixtures are important.

The G/GH Multistage High Pressure Pump is built for systems where high pressure and high-head performance are essential, such as boiler feedwater, firefighting, reverse osmosis and pressure boosting.

The MU-L / MU-LDS Vertical In-Line Pump range is ideal where efficient flow, compact installation and easier maintenance are required, especially in marine, HVAC, water supply, effluent treatment, scrubber and petrochemical environments.

Each range has a different role, but the same underlying purpose: keeping systems reliable, efficient and operational.

Pump Selection Starts With the Application

The right pump is not chosen by name alone.

It is selected by understanding the liquid, the pressure requirement, suction conditions, installation space, maintenance expectations and the operating environment.

Questions worth asking include:

Is the liquid clean, slightly dirty, corrosive, oily or vapour-laden?
Does the system require high pressure or high head?
Is floor space limited?
Will maintenance access be difficult?
Is the application marine, industrial, utility, petrochemical or water-related?
What happens if the pump stops unexpectedly?

By starting with the application, you choose a pump that supports the whole system — not just the immediate duty point.

Southern Pumps SA supplies pump solutions for demanding industrial and marine applications, helping customers select products suited to their process requirements, operating conditions and long-term performance needs.

Because when the right pump is matched to the right application, the result is more than flow.

It is reliability, efficiency and confidence in the process.
